I suggest that you optimize your browser to make sure that it isn't contributing to this issue. This will also serve as an initial troubleshooting step to clean up unnecessary clutter in your hard disk and improve browser performance.

For Internet Explorer - kindly close all the programs you are running on your computer.  Then you can simply press (Ctrl+ Shift + Del) key, check all the boxes when Delete Browsing History windows pop up. Click Delete and then OK.

In addition, you can also reset Internet Explorer settings by following the steps on the link below:

If the issue persists, we'd like you to provide us the answers to the following questions that I have enumerated below. These will help us to investigate and eliminate the possible causes of this issue your concern:

•Does the issue happen when using a different computer?

•Do other Hotmail/Outlook.com accounts encounter the same issue when using your computer?

•Does the same thing happen when you access your account from the same computer with a different browser?

I am not on Windows, using OS X and I have had the error in Opera and Safari, and IE (when I was on a school computer), and I know it is a server side error as I have cleared my browser many times for the last 3 years

snt002 Is the server I am on (this happens when I was using hotmail, still doing it when I am on Outlook preview)

I have gotten the same thing when trying in virtual machines

"please try to use https"  I set it to always use https when I first got the option to a while ago, so thats

not going to fix the server bug, I am on snt002 for the server

side note:

"You could also refer to this article about the supported browsers for Hotmail and Outlook" I rather not deal with that horse $hit as the web (have help Opera in the past with the bad coding and they still know of when MSN send broken code to Opera on purpose) is not just IE, browser sniffer breaks the site in a day when a browser gets updated, better to do feature detection even the IE blog has said to do that

It does not matter what browser I use I still get the error, not sure  how the session can time out if i have no cookie for the site (I have Opera set to delete cookies on exit)

I don't get it on every log in, but I do on most of them, even if I don't log in for over 24 hours I still get the mesage

Listed below are the common reasons on why you encountered "Your session has timed out" error when logging in to Hotmail/Outlook.com.

  • Certain period of inactivity - web server will automatically close the session if the sign in page left unattended. You can resolve this by re-opening the Hotmail/Outlook.com website.
  • Poor internet connection - please ensure that you have a good internet connection. You may need to contact your system administrator or your internet service provider and ask for assistance about the configuration settings you may need to resolve this issue.

Nope & nope

"Certain period of inactivity" how can a powered off computer be on the website?  I am not even on the computer before the server error, got it about 10 minutes ago a bit after I turned on my computer

Speedtest says I am faster than 89% of the US and the connection is in great connect

So still at a strange server bug from about 5 years ago

I can get the error even if I log onto outlook.com with a different machine, which pushes it even further to be a broken setting on the server snt002 side

I have had the Microsoft/hotmail account since before the Windows Live combo thing

I know it is not an issue on my end but a server issue as I have had it in more than one browser for over 4 years now, have had it happen on school computer, deleting cookies (Opera deletes the cookies every time I close Opera) and cache does nothing it does not do it to me at every sign, started about 5 years ago, OS X or Windows it does not matter

http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser's-Cache#Opera  Does not have that in Opera in the edit site preferences you can delete cookies on a per site basis, which I have tried over 50 times
